SAY goodbye to Dry January and hello to Frugal February.
This month is a good time to change spending habits and super-charge your finances.
You’ll be amazed how much you can save just by making a few small adjustments.
Here are some simple ideas to help you out . . .
PRESS PAUSE: Can you survive without Netflix and Spotify this month? I bet you could go without Amazon Prime. Pause those subscriptions and save £25.97 by the end of February.
SWAP SHOP: If your family love big-brand products at the supermarket, try swapping one or two for own- brand versions to see if anyone notices. Tesco’s 550g tomato ketchup is 65p, while Heinz’s 250g bottle will set you back £1.20. My favourite dupe is Aldi’s Nutoka chocolate spread, only 99p compared with around £3 for a jar of Nutella.
LIGHTBULB MOMENT: Little changes can make a big difference to bills. Turn off lights when you leave a room and always switch off plugs at the wall before you go to bed. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that appliances left on standby cost the average household £80 a year. Game consoles are the worst, so make sure they are not left connected.
FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD: Can you challenge yourself to a packed lunch every day during February? Or you could maybe set yourself an even stricter budget for your lunch. Miguel Barclay’s £1 recipes and The Skint Chef blog are good places to start. The Olio app can help save money, too. It connects you with neighbours and local businesses to share excess food, such as bread from bakers’ shops or groceries from someone’s fridge when they go away on their holidays.
DIY SOS: Going DIY with your beauty regime for a month could save you lots. Do you get your roots done once a month? Clairol’s Root Touch Up is just £5.99 at Boots. Even better, it is now on a two-for-£9 offer. I have swapped two salon gel-manicures a month for the Rio LED at-home gel-polish set which is reduced by a fiver at Argos, to £24.99.

GREEN is the colour for spring. But instead of forking out £25 for the long-sleeve French Connection shirt at Asos, opt for the New Look version which is a perfect choice for less money.
